Giving your students their best chance to succeed
FreeNurseTutor gives educators an easy practical way to add computer based learning activities to their current teaching methods. Computer based learning is not just a popular trend; it fills an important void in the educational process. There are several basic educational needs that are clearly better satisfied when computer based learning is used to supplement the more traditional methods of teaching. Consider the following basic learning principles:
Rate
Each student learns best when material is presented at a rate that is matched to the student's abilities.
Self-paced computer based activities give each student the opportunity to work at their optimal rate.
Repetition
Some students need more repetition than others for effective learning.
Computer based activities can be repeated as often as necessary.
Interactive vs Passive
Interactive education is generally more effective than passive education.
Computer based activities are able to provide a more interactive learning experience with frequent input required from every student to keep every student actively engaged.
Preparedness
In real life, students are not always prepared to learn during regular school hours, sometimes due to factors beyond their control.
Computer based activities are available any time the student is ready to learn, day or night.
Learning Style
Every person learns best in a different way.
For many students, listening to classroom lectures or reading a textbook is not their best way to learn.
Computer based activities offer a variety of formats for learning activities that can be more engaging and more effective for students.
Even the best teacher cannot provide a highly individualized learning experience for each of their students using traditional methods alone. To more fully address the important issues of rate, repetition, interactivity and individual learning style, the use of computer based learning activities are necessary to give every student their best chance to succeed.
FreeNurseTutor gives you the quickest, easiest, and most practical way to begin adding useful computer based learning activities to your teaching methods. In some ways it is like having a tutor for every one of your students . . . and it's completely free to educators and students!
Without a MySchool Account
The simplest way to use FreeNurseTutor is WITHOUT a MySchool Account by using only the existing learning activities in the FreeNurseTutor Library. (These are accessed by first clicking on a Topic to Study and then clicking on the title of a specific activity. No login is required.) Students can independently explore and select activities for self-directed study or instructors can recommend specific activities for their students to study in school or away from school.
With a MySchool Account
Creating an Instructor MySchool Account provides a more versatile and powerful way to use FreeNurseTutor. A MySchool Account allows instructors to create and save computer based learning activities by adding their own content to various types of activities or by editing existing activities from the FreeNurseTutor Library. This lets instructors develop customized content to meet their specific teaching needs. The activities can be used by students anywhere with Internet access, in school or away from school.
DESCRIPTION OF THE FREENURSETUTOR ACTIVITIES
Flash & Match is great for the memorization of factual information such as Words/Definitions, Body Structure/Functions, Drugs/Effects, etc. Electronic flashcards allow students to repeatedly self-test themselves until they master the facts. A Matchgame is generated for every Flashcard set, using the same set of facts. Matchgames provide an entertaining way to continue reinforcing important information.
BlankIt is a type of CLOZE exercise. It is useful for teaching and review of just about any important idea or information that can be presented in a short written paragraph. Students stay mentally engaged because important teaching points are presented within the paragraph as fill-in-the-blank options. The power of the BlankIt activity is that it makes it impossible for students to lose focus.
Millionaire Games allow instructors to turn any multiple choice quiz or test into a compelling learning or review game. When educational content is combined with this popular game format, the result is an exceptionally engaging learning activity. Students don’t want to stop until they reach the top level and win the game by answering all questions correctly!
GroupIt requires students to move information “cards” to the correct category. As students engage in classification of information, they build additional mental pathways, which improves retention. Mistakes are counted and a timer counts until all cards are moved correctly. Students try to finish with no mistakes and then attempt to beat their own best time.
Assessment lets students assess a “virtual patient” by finding data from twenty-eight possible assessment points. Then students compare their own written assessment notes with an example of a properly written assessment. This is a great way to expand exposure to patients with various conditions and improve assessment skills. Instructors can recreate patients encountered in actual clinical settings or provide hypothetical situations for valuable teaching opportunities.
Charting presents students with a scenario, patient information and doctor’s orders which are entered by the instructor. Students consider the available information, complete their own charting and then compare their own entry to an example of proper charting. This activity provides an opportunity for much needed extra charting practice.
InForm gives instructors a simple way to create customized forms that students can complete online and then print or automatically email to their instructor. This is a quick, easy and paperless way to receive information from students. Instructors have the option of giving feedback to students by return email. InForm is ideal for careplans, but possible uses are unlimited because instructors enter their own questions or descriptions of the information that students must provide.
InfoLink gives instructors a way to easily create links to favorite educational websites and attach instructions for how the site should be used by students. Your instructions provide direction and purpose. Students can go to a recommended website for a stated purpose with a single click.
